She Alerts
An affordable, automatic emergency fall device
3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for falls each year according to the CDC.
We set out to use the available micro-controller tech to create a device to help society. Taking in our resources we decided to make an affordable wearable device for older citizens.
HOW IT WORKS
She Alerts is a piece of wearable hardware that tracks your heart rate and includes a tilt sensor and LED. If She Alerts detects a high heart rate and the tilt sensor goes off, it prompts the LED. She Alerts waits for a few seconds and if a button is not pressed indicating that the wearer is alright then She Alerts sends an email to a doctor and family member.
WHAT WE USED
We used an intel Galileo board, LED, button sensor, an infrared heart beat detector, and a mercury tilt sensor.
CHALLENGES
We were mostly limited by the technology provided. The heart sensor does not work perfectly, so we had to try to find a way to smooth out a lot of the data and look for patterns. Another challenge was trying to figure out how to make it wearable in this phase, considering the amount of wires needed to connect everything (including the device into a computer).
