Inspiration
Women often receive suboptimal medical care due to a lack of research in women subjects and biases held by healthcare providers. For example, many studies include mostly male or all-male test subjects, which do not account for hormonal and anatomical differences between men and women. This has led to suboptimal healthcare for women and incorrect dismissals of female patients.
What it does
Users can voluntarily input data and test results that may be used to improve research about women in “Journal”. We provide a community forum for patients to share their experiences after a healthcare appointment, so users can have a safe space to talk about their health without being dismissed. Just finished an appointment? Write a review! Users can report doctors who failed to offer fair and adequate healthcare or refused to perform elective procedures for non-medical reasons such as egg freezing or tubal ligation.
How we built it
We used Repl.it to code our website and programmed our website using HTML and CSS. We embedded google forms and bravenet into our html.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we faced was that we all had different coding experiences. This made us stronger but also weaker. We had a wide variety of knowledge on computer science and programming, but because of this, we all had different skills. We had to come up with the best plan that would utilize all of our skills equally to come together and make a project as a group. We also tried to create an AI that would learn from user data and integrate Google API but we ran out of time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our website as a whole! This was a new experience for most of our team, and we are proud that we were able to work together virtually to make She’s Heard.
What we learned
Technica 2020 was the first hackathon for 3 out of the 4 members of our group. This means we learned a lot! Annelise had never programmed in HTML before, so she learned how to code in a new language that was unfamiliar to her. Tanvi had to refresh her HTML and CSS skills and apply them in a completely new way. Priscilla refreshed her HTML and css skills and learned more about python libraries and machine learning.
What's next for She's Heard
In the future, we hope to be able to use the data from our health journal to perform research on female health, improving healthcare for women. We will use nltk, pandas, numpy, and tensorflow to create a classifier that can identify possible diseases for users when they submit a journal. We could also buy a domain for our website and create a mobile app.
