OnlySharks

What is OnlySharks?

We love sharks! Making a microblogging service centered around our favorite aquatic pal just seemed like the right thing to do. We were inspired by services like emoj.li, which makes use of strictly emoji-based communication. We also replicated a simpler Twitter-styled interface in order to make it easily understandable and approachable for new users. We hope using it'll be fun, creative and memorable!

What OnlySharks does

OnlySharks functions as a microblogging service similar to a mix of Twitter and emoj.li but with a marine shark theme. We did our best to incorporate all the major features you would expect from a social media service of this type, including user registration/login, security features, profile customization, search, and post/image sharing.

How we built OnlySharks

Blood, sweat, tears and sharks. Also: diesel.rs, jsonwebtoken, rust, postgresql, rocket.rs, and sodiumoxide.

Challenges we ran into

We had a very tight timeframe to work on our project, especially balancing our other obligations. This is also the first hackathon we've submitted a project of this scale to, along with the first hackathon in general for a majority of our team. We stayed up pretty late at night to get it all done!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our lead programmer was able to write a furnished microblogging service with a custom authentication system, various features/functionalities and internet connectivity. We were also collectively able to develop a themed graphical interface on a short timeframe. Working on this project over the weekend was a challenging undertaking but we greatly enjoyed our learning experience.

What we learned

Working on this project certainly heightened our proficiency in collaboration and time management. We were able to learn more about how webpages function and effective/manageable ways of storing data to be used by different areas of our project. We also got to have more experience with graphic and interface design! It would be very helpful knowledge for us in terms of further web development in the future.

What's next for the OnlySharks project

We plan to introduce updates to reinforce user security via the OnlySharks Submarine Update, and extend the reach of the OnlySharks timeline in order to allow the user to reach even further depths of the great blue sea using a Shark Submarine. Our page also morphs to fit the dimensions of the browser used to access OnlySharks. However, over time, we can perfect the process of morphing our page to best fit mobile views. Although we may be a small team, we would love to use OnlySharks to help raise awareness and support the protection of sharks all around the world!
