SFU Connect

Inspiration

SFU has a reputation for being a lonely commuter school. We want to change the narrative and promote a social scene.

What it does

Users can scroll through a live feed where they can either post meetups or interact with posts of meetups they want to attend via a live group chat. Our main focus is fostering in person interactions between students.

How we built it

We built the app using React and Firebase API to store our users information. Firebase was used to create an authentication, login, and chatting system for our application. We used pre-made components via Mantine to help speed up the development process.

Challenges we ran into

We had challenges setting up Firebase with React. Notably we had a silly error where React sent every request twice, but Firebase began invalidating the link. This caused our firebase verification to state an invalid authentication, when in reality everything was working well. Another challenge was merging our branches, but after each merge we got better at understanding what was going on.
