Inspiration

We wanted to try and explain use of technology to people who did not grow up with it. Seniors are already at higher health risk than younger member of society; it is tough for them to have to learn to navigate the internet as well.

What it does

We split this up into four main categories we found relevant: financial, social, entertainment, and shopping. Each of these is divided up into subcategories by specific web apps. Each subcategory explains the fundamentals of using that resource as well as very basic troubleshooting advice.

How we built it

Using Vue and the Vuetify library, we developed a navigation system for the site. We each took a category and fleshed out explanations and troubleshooting guides.

What we learned

For three of us, this was our first experience with front-end programming, as well as using a GitHub repository to work on code with other people.

Challenges we ran into

Since, for most of us, this was our first time using the JavaScript framework Vue (and our first time using JavaScript in general), the majority of our time was spent learning how to use it and designing the website; we had a lot of small errors that we had to work past. Additionally, there was something of a learning curve when it came to learning how to use git.

What's next for ASeniorGuideToTech.

Here were two challenges we planned on tackling, but did not have sufficient time to do in the hackathon:

  1. Ideally, we wanted to try and implement a chatbot feature within our troubleshooting sections; the idea was that the user could directly input their tech questions, and the bot would help her through it, but time didn't allow for that. Implementing the troubleshooting chatbot is the logical next step for this project. This idea was inspired by Altria's "Most Innovative and Insightful Use of Virtual Agents" challenge.

  2. We were also considering making simple, but effective data analysis products for the elderly to become more educated and aware of the current COVID-19 status. This idea was inspired by Cotiviti's "Best Application of ML geared towards the Covid-19 Crisis" challenge.

Just because the hackathon is over, does not mean this project has to stop here. As with many hackathon products, if not all, our product is simply a prototype to its true potential. What's next should be something we could look forward to in the future, and something we could ambitiously try if we ever come around to doing this project again.
