Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the struggles we saw in our grandparents with missed medications, forgotten beautiful moments, and the longing for connection in an increasingly digital world. Too often, technology leaves seniors behind, and we wanted to change that.
What it does
SeniorCompanion offers various features, including health stat tracking, memo capture, talk with a health chatbot advisor, and reminders for their exercise and medication. With SeniorCompanion, we set out to create more than just an app. We wanted to build a gentle and reliable presence (something that helps seniors feel seen, supported, and safe). SeniorCompanion is created to bring back a sense of control, comfort, and happiness in their everyday lives.
How we built it
We developed SeniorCompanion using: React Native, TypeScript, Node, Gemini API.
- For the user dashboard, we track and record each time a user completes their exercise or takes their medication on schedule. These actions are then summed and displayed on the dashboard, creating a gamified experience that encourages consistency and makes staying healthy more engaging and rewarding.
- For the image and memo gallery, users can either capture new photos or import them from their local library to preserve meaningful moments. Each image can be paired with a custom description, helping them remember what made that moment special and they can also view images as slideshow.
- For the health chatbot advisor, we specifically designed the chatbot to act as a supportive health guide. It connects with the user’s health stats from their data to better understand their condition and offer personalized, accurate advice to their well-being.
- For medication and exercise reminders, users can set the specific activities they want to be notified about. They can add images of the medicine (in case they forget which one), the URL for exercise tutorial link or doctor's instruction. The system then sends timely notifications to their phone. If the task hasn’t been marked as completed, the reminder will repeat at shorter intervals to gently remind them.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing a user interface that is both simple and informative. We wanted it to be easy enough for someone unfamiliar with technology, yet rich enough to provide meaningful insights. Balancing clarity with functionality took several iterations and constant user testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that every feature we envisioned made it into our final product. From secure Face ID login to a fully functional AI chat experience, we stayed on track and delivered a product that feels whole. Most importantly, we’re proud that we built something that has the potential to genuinely help people we care about.
What we learned
This project taught us more than just technical skills. We strengthened our knowledge in mobile development, UX design, and backend integration. But even more valuable was what we learned about teamwork, empathy-driven design, and the importance of building tech that serves people, not just trends.
What's next for SeniorCompanion
Next, we plan to:
- Deploy SeniorCompanion to app stores
- Collect real user feedback, especially from senior communities and caregivers
- Improve the app based on that feedback
- Add new features like voice control and wearable integration to make the experience even more seamless
Finally, SeniorCompanion is just getting started, and we’re excited to continue growing it into a trusted digital companion for seniors everywhere.
