Inspiration
Food wastage is a major problem globally, and it is estimated that one-third of all food produced in the world is wasted every year. One of the biggest contributors to this problem is the restaurant industry. Restaurants often have excess food that goes to waste, either because it is not sold or because it is not fresh enough to be served the next day. This inspired us to build an app that connects restaurants with people who are looking for affordable, high-quality food while reducing food wastage at the same time.
What it does
Our app connects restaurants with people who are looking for affordable, high-quality food. Restaurants can post their excess food on the app, and users can purchase it at a reduced price. The app also shows the locations of the restaurants on a map, making it easy for users to find them. By using our app, users can save money on food while also reducing food wastage.
How we built it
We built the app using a combination of technologies, including React for the frontend, Node.js for the backend, and MongoDB for the database. We also used Leaflet.js Maps to show the locations of the restaurants/food vendors on the frontend. The app is designed to be user-friendly, with a simple interface that makes it easy for users to find and purchase food from restaurants.
Challenges we ran into
challenge was designing a user-friendly interface that would appeal to both restaurants and users. We had to go through several iterations before arriving at a design that worked for both parties.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we have created a working app in under 24 hours that can make a real difference in reducing food wastage. We are also proud of the fact that we were able to design an interface that works well for both restaurants and users.
What's next for SecondServings
In the future, we plan to expand the app to include more restaurants and users. We also plan to add more features, such as the ability for users to rate restaurants and for restaurants to donate excess food to local charities. Ultimately, we hope to make a real difference in reducing food wastage and helping people access affordable, high-quality food.
