Inspiration
- As first-generation college students, we experienced how confusing the college process can be without guidance.
- The average U.S. public school counselor ratio is 372:1, leaving many students without personalized support.
- We wanted to create a platform that makes higher education feel more accessible and less overwhelming.
What it does
- Matches students with colleges based on academics, finances, career goals, and lifestyle preferences.
- Generates personalized Match Scores along with Reach, Target, and Safety school recommendations.
How we built it
- We built out the front end using next.js and built backend out using python and the FastAPI framework.
- We used the Open AI api to process the users data and generate a response based on the users data.
- We then used Adal.AI to generate code for next.js components, build out our FastAPI's, and also help to build out our python logic for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
- One challenge was learning how to view the platform from the student’s perspective.
- We reflected on our own first-generation college application experiences to simplify the user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a polished and functional AI-powered college matching platform.
- Successfully integrated ADAL AI into the recommendation and reasoning system.
- Created personalized Match Scores and realistic college recommendations for users.
What we learned
- We learned how important user experience and clarity are when building a product.
- We gained experience integrating AI tools into a real-world application.
- We learned how to rapidly prototype and collaborate under hackathon time constraints.
What's next for Scholr.ai
- Expand the college database and improve recommendation accuracy.
- Add scholarship and financial aid matching features.
- Eventually support transfer students and mentorship opportunities for first-generation students.
