Inspiration

Many scam websites online impersonate other popular e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon or E-bay. We want to avenge the many grandpas and innocent internet users who fell pray to these devious traps, and punish scammers.

What it does

By putting in a fake credit card number that conforms to the Luhn Algorithm, it gets declined each time it is processed. However, the owner of the website (scammer) pays 5 cents each time that happens. Thus, the bill snowballs rapidly.

How we built it

We built the website with HTML, styled it with CSS, and added interactivity for backend with Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

We faced technical challenges particularly with Javascript, where the url the user inputted would not be recorded and shown. We solved this issue by proactively reaching out to the event organizer and asking for help.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Solving a real-world issue, and having fun doing so.

What we learned

We learned web development skills on the spot, and team working skills.

What's next for Scam Shield

Make submitting requests automated, so that an algorithm can streamline and increase the efficiency of charging the scam websites.
