Inspiration 💭

My inspiration for this project comes from my personal experiences during my IB exams last year. I had one month to prepare for exams in math and physics, but found myself spending LOADS of time on TikTok. When I saw that the theme for this hackathon was time, I knew I had to create a project based around the danger of short form content, with an emphasis on TikTok.

What it does ✍️

Similar to the original Mario titles, this is a 2D side scrolling parkour game. You are meant to use WASD and Space to navigate the level, jumping over spikes and avoiding the deadly TikTok logos. The aim of the game is to beat the level as quickly as possible, and in order to help you achieve that goal, "Gas Gas Gas" blares in your ears to cheer you on!

How we built it ⚒️

I built this game using the Unity engine and the C# programming language. I created scripts to handle the player movement, enemy movement, game logic, collisions, music, animations and art. By using a combination of different tags and components, I successfully linked together all of these aspect in order to release a well built and polished product.

Challenges we ran into 👷‍♂️

Apart from basic annoying bugs, I had a huge challenge in that I could not figure out how to get the enemies to patrol. They kept going past the edge of their respective regions and falling into pits / getting stuck.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏅

I'm proud of having been able to deliver a polished final product with some extent of replayability, as well as having been able to learn and implement new things on-the-fly.

What we learned 📏

I learned a lot about Unity 2D with this project, specifically in the region of tilemaps and the animation of sprites. These are two very important aspects of game development, so I'm glad I was able to get some experience with them. On top of these, I also gained invaluable practice in terms of my game design skills; I improved my planning, adequately limiting the effect of scope creep and remaining focused on my goal, which was to create a well rounded, replayable product.

What's next for Save Those Seconds! 🎯

In the future, I'd like to continue working on this project by adding more maps and a time-freeze ability. I'm envisioning floating stopwatches that, when collected by the player, freeze time for 2 - 3 seconds (everything except the player), thus making the TikTok enemies much easier to avoid.
