Inspiration
We all have items we wish we could purchase. Sadly, we are not all made from money. This website cannot help fix that problem. But fear not! You can still purchase that wonderful dream car or that stunning portrait that matches the design of your house décor. Simply add all your dream purchases to ‘Save it for Later’ and watch the magic unfold. ‘Save it for Later’ will analyze your financial data and allocate small sums of money each month to your dream purchase. You may not be able to buy that vacation to Hawaii instantly, but with a little time and patience the credit will add up. Not only will your dreams come true, but you will be able to reach the ends of the universe all while maintaining your financial savviness. Don’t throw out those special dreams. Instead ‘Save it for Later.’
What it does
The website prompts the user to enter his/her current savings, monthly income, and monthly expenses. ‘Save it for Later’ then calculates the amount of money remaining and brings the value to the wish list function. The user then creates his/her wish list by adding multiple items to the list along with their prices and priority level. The higher priority items will be allocated a higher percentage of the money remaining. Each month the user updates his/her profile, allowing the system to allocate the extra money to each item and eventually items will become available for purchase.
How we built it
We split up into three teams. The first team worked on the website backbone and appearance using html and css. The second team worked on the algorithms and financial calculations using javascript. The third team coordinated between the first two teams, combining the various codes and uploading them to GitHub.
Challenges we ran into
- Learning to code in css, javascript, and html
- Learning to use github
- Merging and sharing codes
- Planning proper data structures
What's next for Save it for Later
In the future we hope to create options for users to upload their bills and expenses directly to the website in order to calculate the total remaining money in a more accurate and user friendly way. Additionally, we would like to partner with various banks and build ‘Save it for Later’ directly into their systems. This will be a great opportunity for users to incorporate some fun into the financial process.
