Inspiration

Over the last few months, we have all been isolated in one way or another (mentally, physically, geographically, etc.) and it has become increasingly obvious how important human interaction and connection truly is. Our team has participated in dozens of Zooms, Teams, Discords, Blackboards, etc. etc. etc., for both leisure and study, and noticed that the games with the most fun or the classes with the most success are always those that incentivize communication.

What it does

Santa’s Workshop is a collaborative game where one person controls an elf that has to select whether certain reindeer still have to be fed before Christmas, while the others are responsible for combing through the manual to figure out which reindeer that is. In this way, we are hoping to bring people together through the power of play, much of which has been lacking lately.

How we built it

Working with our past basic experience with python, we gathered a lot of research on game making with a variety of Python libraries and eventually chose to further explore Arcade's capabilities to recreate our game idea.

Challenges we ran into

In the beginning of this Hackathon, we were not sure which project we wanted to pursue, and in the bustle of the Holiday Season, with numerous distractions and commitments that kept us more preoccupied, we took our time deciding and going on to actually build it. It was more challenging because e were all relatively inexperienced with the tools needed for this project, especially the two of us with no coding knowledge, but we knew what we wanted to make and went at it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We came together as a team to develop something pretty cool, and to do so, pushed our boundaries and learned to work together better and to do things we would not have expected only 48 hours ago.

What we learned

Better collaboration and organization through Git and Github, planning and development of front- and back-end elements of video games, elements of graphic design.

What's next for Santa's Workshop

As a game, there is plenty of room for Santa’s Workshop to grow. We focused on the base aspects of the game, but we also thought of many parts that could be added or expanded, such as more colors and patterns to differentiate reindeer, more accessories and actions, and additional components entirely, such as gift or sleigh challenges, all of which would expand on the game’s premise and be more difficult and fun for players to sort through.
