What inspired you
Neighbourhood watches are organized worldwide in order to reduce crime and promote crime prevention in local neighbourhoods. It is without a doubt that neighbourhood watches are one of the most common organized crime presentation activities. However, most neighbourhood watches rely on means such as phone, email, and social media in order to communicate. What if there was a way that members of a neighbourhood watch or residents in a local neighbourhood can report safety threats?
Introducing Safety Doggo, a platform that aims to allow for users to report safety threats that residents have seen in their area. Through our web application, users have the ability to report threats such as bullying, fights, homophobic incidents, theft, and sexual assault. With our interactive map implementation, users have the ability to check safety threats within their own neighbourhoods or other neighbourhoods in their area. Safety Doggo offers safety tips and videos in order to educate its users on safety and crime presentation.
All reports filed on Safety Doggo are completely anonymous to the public. We hope for our application has an impact on others in order to promote crime prevention and developing safe neighbourhoods.
What you learned
Upon completion of the application, our team had the privilege of further developing our web development skills. Since we were all of different levels of our knowledge of web development, it was a great experience to be able to develop a web application over the course of a weekend. On top of furthering our web development skills, our team gained experience in developing UI designs in Adobe XD, as well as creating custom icons to be used in our project.
How you built your project
Our project is a web application built using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery. An API component was developed in order to retrieve and pass information from the report form. For our map integration, we used the Bing Maps API in order to display the map.
Challenges you faced
The challenges we faced in developing this project was putting the project all together. Since we focused on separate parts of the web application, putting all of these together in the end deemed to be a challenge in the end. In addition to this, creating a working API proved to be challenging. Despite these challenges, we worked as a team to get through these challenges as best as we could. o
