Inspiration

In United States, there has been an average of one school shooting each week, and 18 school shootings since the beginning of this year. As college students, it's important that we use technology to combat this problem. And since the Columbine High School massacre, there had been more than 122 students died because of shootings.

What it does

SafeSpots is an app that allows police officers to respond immediately to a school shooting on campus.

  • The app detects if there's a gunshot sound through a decible meter (>140) and send alerts to police / students within the area immediately.
  • Police can quickly clear areas and see a list of students within gunshot that are in danger
  • Students can see a list of safe buildings cleared by police and quickest route to go there
  • Student can report their location through the app silently if they are in situation where they cannot call 911.

How we built it

Utilize TypeScripts, Cordova, Firebase, Google Maps API for the app. We use Twilio API to facilitate conversation between police officer, medical emergency, and the student.

What's next for SafeSpots

We want to refine user interface and expand outside of Rutgers University location. We want to garner more data so that location for safe buildings will be more extensive.
