Inspiration
We all have things we turn to for comfort. Whether it's playing the guitar, hitting the gym, or binging our favourite shows, sometimes it's easy to forget what our mind and body really needs amidst all the noise.
What it does
SafeSpace takes all your favourite comfort activities and brings them to you in one place. Within seconds, create your own safe space with all your comfort objects to unwind and escape. Click on different objects to be instantly immersed in videos, media, and games associated with them.
How we built it
We primarily used React framework with JavaScript and CSS. We also experimented with natural language processing technologies and Spotify's API.
Challenges we ran into
For 75% of us, it was our first hackathon and first time working with these technologies. From creating our first React app, experimenting with AI, to integrating APIs, we truly exposed ourselves to as many different skills as possible. It was difficult navigating all the moving parts of developing an application in a team and keeping track of what parts need to be completed first. However, we still managed to put together our final product with the help of each other and mentors :)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing the project!
What we learned
We strengthened our skills in JavaScript, JSX, and CSS, while putting into practice modular programming techniques. We developed our familiarity with technologies like Git, GitHub, and VSCode, and now have a newfound appreciation for web development!
What's next for SafeSpace
To grow the project, we could train the AI model to recognize more areas of comfort for people. Integrating SDKs, APIs, and cloud services would add more functionality, like improving the Spotify section or the ability to join your friend's comfort space. Building a quick-access app would make everything easier to use, and adding a filtered social feed where clicking on an object takes you to related Instagram posts (like cat or food posts) could make the experience more fun and interactive.
