Inspiration

As women, we've been surrounded by pregnant women close to us and witnessed firsthand the challenges they face navigating healthcare decisions. We wanted to create a solution that empowers expectant mothers with the critical information they need—from environmental health risks to quality healthcare access—all while respecting their privacy and autonomy during one of life's most vulnerable moments.

What it does

SafeNest is a comprehensive maternal health platform that combines environmental health data, healthcare facility information, and community support. It provides real-time air quality monitoring and pollution exposure data, detailed information about nearby OB-GYN clinics (including ratings, insurance, and services), AI-powered medical document interpretation with translation features, and secure community forums where users can connect with verified healthcare providers and other mothers sharing similar experiences.

How we built it

We built SafeNest with a privacy-first architecture that keeps all user data and documents local to the device. The platform integrates multiple data sources including environmental monitoring APIs for air quality and pollution data, healthcare facility databases for clinic information, and on-device AI processing for medical document analysis. We implemented secure community features with verifiable doctor accounts and specialized chat rooms, all while ensuring no personal health data leaves the user's device.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was balancing comprehensive data integration with our commitment to user privacy. Processing medical documents and environmental data locally while maintaining performance required careful optimization. Integrating the MindStudio AI Agent was difficult, and we also faced difficulties aggregating reliable, real-time healthcare facility data across Southern California and ensuring our AI-generated insights remained transparent, unbiased, and clearly labeled as informational rather than medical advice. However, we're proud of overcoming our obstacles!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a truly privacy-preserving health platform that doesn't compromise on functionality. Our ethical care framework ensures users maintain complete control over their data while still accessing powerful AI-driven insights. We successfully integrated complex environmental health data with healthcare access information in an intuitive interface, and built a supportive community space that prioritizes both human connection and verified medical expertise—all backed by research showing the real impact of environmental pollutants on maternal and fetal health in Southern California.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that building truly ethical health technology requires rethinking conventional approaches to data handling—privacy isn't just a feature, it's a fundamental right, especially in maternal healthcare. We discovered the profound impact environmental factors have on pregnancy outcomes, particularly in Southern California where pollution exposure directly correlates with maternal and fetal morbidity. We also gained deep insights into the barriers expectant mothers face in accessing quality care, from navigating complex medical documents to finding trustworthy information in their communities. Most importantly, we learned that technology should empower rather than extract—giving users tools and knowledge while respecting their autonomy and dignity throughout their pregnancy journey.

What's next for SafeNest

We plan to expand our Risk Map with additional environmental factors like water pollution, access to public transportation, and educational resources for post-natal care. We're developing an MCP-powered symptoms logger that privately analyzes user-logged symptoms and care notes directly on device, helping surface trends and early concerns without compromising privacy. We also aim to connect patients directly to clinic alternatives like doulas and midwives, catering to those who may not feel comfortable in traditional clinical settings, ensuring every mother has access to the care pathway that works best for her.
