Inspiration

Immigrant women facing domestic violence often struggle to access help due to language barriers, cultural isolation, and fear of legal repercussions. Traditional support systems fail to provide real-time, accessible, and culturally sensitive assistance. Inspired by real stories and research on domestic violence among immigrant communities, we built SafeHaven—a platform that breaks these barriers and provides a safe space for women in need.

What it does

SafeHaven is a mobile app designed to support immigrant women facing domestic violence by offering: ✅ Live chat with real-time translation – Speak with trained advocates in any language. ✅ Community support chats – Private, culturally sensitive groups for connection and healing. ✅ Resource hub – Legal, financial, and shelter resources tailored to immigrants. ✅ Discreet safety features – Quick-exit buttons, encrypted messaging, and hidden access modes to ensure privacy.

How we built it

We used React Native for the front-end, ensuring a smooth and responsive mobile experience. Firebase powers our real-time chat, while Google Translate API enables seamless multilingual communication. We also integrated secure encryption to protect user data and ensure safety. We also used clerk for the low level authentication of our users, mongodb for our database management, AWS s3 for cloud storage of the data.

Challenges we ran into

🔹 Implementing real-time translation while maintaining chat accuracy and security. 🔹 Designing a discreet UI that protects users from potential harm. 🔹 Ensuring our resource hub is comprehensive and trustworthy. 🔹 Managing time effectively in a 24-hour hackathon while balancing innovation and functionality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

🏆 Building a fully functional prototype in such a short timeframe. 🏆 Successfully integrating real-time translation for multilingual support. 🏆 Designing a safe, discreet, and user-friendly interface. 🏆 Creating something that can truly make a difference in people’s lives.

What we learned

🔹 The importance of user-centered design in sensitive applications. 🔹 How to balance security and accessibility when working with vulnerable communities. 🔹 The power of real-time communication and translation in breaking barriers. 🔹 The significance of teamwork and adaptability in a high-pressure environment.

What's next for SafeHaven
