safeHaven

Inspiration: Struggling students don’t always have the resources or aren’t ready to speak to a counselor or reach out for help. In addition, it is sometimes intimidating to be vulnerable with another person and talk about personal struggles, physical or mental; This inspired us to create a safe space where students feel they have someone to talk to without feeling as vulnerable as they would with another person.

What our project does: To make things more intimate for users, we created our mascot, Haven. Haven is a capybara, one of the friendliest animals in the wild. Haven gently validates your emotions, feelings, and experiences, checks on our users' well-being, and readily offers support, encouragement, praise, and kind reminders. For example, Haven might say something like, “Doing your best will look different from another person’s, and that’s okay,” “You are so much more than your academic performance,” “Your grades don’t define you” or “It is necessary and okay to take breaks.”

How we built it: We used openAI API which we accessed with Fetch API and express server. Our client side is deployed to vercel.com and the server side was deployed to render.com.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of: We are proud of the safe and supportive environment we created within our prototype Safe<3Haven and team members. We are also proud of how we adapted to losing members last minute. And lastly we are very proud to have our api call finally working which gives Haven its voice.

What we learned: We learned how to use Figma, efficiently communicate with team members, navigate bumps in the road like losing teammates last minute, and think on our toes to organize game plans under a time crunch.

What’s next for our project: We at Safe<3Haven want what is best for all students. We put the needs of students first. We have brainstormed about including a mood tracker, habit tracker, positive affirmations, improved UI and creating a dashboard to keep track of progress along with login.
