Inspiration
A lot of UC Merced’s student body is new to town, and because of that people are a little more hesitant to go outside and see what Merced has to offer. As we come out of quarantine, the hesitance seems to be even more amplified. If you ask a student, “What is your favorite thing to do with Merced?”, usually you are told that there is not much to do, but that is just not true! From monthly Superflea events, Kreepy Kawaii art galleries, live music, and even air hockey and karaoke downtown, Merced is constantly teaming with life. This app is aimed at gapping the bridge between newcomers to Merced, people who have lived here since childhood, and everyone in between. Go out and explore, you’ll be surprised by what you find!
What it does
Small local businesses owners within Merced are able to post sign up and about the events they are hosting. There is also an rsvp system implemented for those who are unsure if there will be a crowd showing up or for those who need a buddy.
How we built it
Figma for prototyping. Krita for graphic design components. React.js for front-end. Java-script for back-end. Firebase for data base.
Challenges we ran into
Late into the coding process, we realized Github Pages was only used for static websites. This posed to be an issue because our website required an account system. React JS was not rendering our frontend on every group mates’ REACT.JS, and all together making a website. Noor tried to build a parallax scroll, but rellax was not available to react to react.js version 18.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have learned to work with React.js and Firebase. In addition, we also learned and gained experience with using Figma.
What we learned
We learned how to work together as a team unit. Each person had their own tasks and all of us went out of our comfort zones. We also learned the existence and importance of Github repositories.
What's next
Some future features for Weced Merced include personalized event cards for each business, business profile pages, message chats and accounts for non-business owners, the ability to RSVP to events, and ordering events based on time-sensitive dates. For example, our events page would open up with the closest future event to the user’s time stamp. They would be able to scroll up for past events, and down for future events. Additionally, we plan on adding in a calendar, which allows for an easier-to-read visual.
