Inspiration
We took time before we began to research what may be overlooked aspects of environmental care. After searching through possibilities of certain park associations or recycling centers, we realized that disposing batteries correctly is an often new and challenging task for those who may not be used to the process -- notably college students.
What it does
The RyCycle app illustrates a detailed map of the user's location to display the nearest battery disposal centers. Rather than students overlooking this issue due to its inconvenience, they can now be better informed and find accessible locations to help the environment in small, but impactful, ways.
How we built it
First we built the foundation for the app and each of its screens in the design softwares Figma and Canva. From there we implemented the data from NYC-sponsored websites to accurately display detailed graphical information that the user can interact with and explore. The app itself was coded through Javascript and React Native, then programed with the data we collected.
Challenges we ran into
Originally we had wanted to use databases across various websites to collect detailed and up-to-date information about more opportunities to be active in the environmental community. However, this was a more time-consuming and complex task for us to accomplish during this time crunch, so we pivoted to one specific overlooked issue that we could tackle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of how we learned the process of coding an app from scratch -- something which none of us had experience in perviously. Additionally, we are proud of how we were still able to complete a working project that we could be proud of after we had to scrap our previous ideas and efforts.
What we learned.
Throughout our time at DevFest we learned how to establish a fixable problem in people's daily lives, conceptualize ways to combat that problem, and understand what works and what doesn't within a timely manner in order to create the best project possible.
What's next for RyCycle
Given more time to work on this project, we would love to add more features into the map, such as the recycling bin locations and other small ways that people can find solutions for the benefit of the world around them.
