Inspiration

The inspiration for my side scroller comes from the popular Dino Side-scroller that I'm sure everyone is familiar with. Coming in to the hackathon today I wanted to challenge myself not only in having to code and write a functioning game, but also to design all assets for the game in the time allotted. This was especially challenging for me as I am still fairly new to pixel art but wanted to use this opportunity to further develop those skills, as well as my skills in game design and world building.

What it does

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland this project is a handcrafted endless side-scrolling runner where the player controls a character navigating an illustrated world filled with obstacles. The character automatically moves forward, and the player must jump or duck at the right time to avoid collisions and survive as long as possible. As the game progresses, speed increases to gradually raise difficulty, encouraging quick reaction time and maintaining engagement. The scoring system reflects player endurance and creates a simple but satisfying feedback loop. Every visual element, from the character to the obstacles and environment, was custom drawn and intentionally designed to ensure visual clarity and readability during fast-paced gameplay. Animations and collision feedback are tuned to create a smooth, responsive user experience. The game emphasizes intuitive controls, clear visual hierarchy, and cohesive art direction, demonstrating thoughtful UI/UX design in a minimal, focused gameplay loop.

How we built it

All coding and game design elements were created in Godot, and all pixel artwork and assets were created in Aseprite.

Challenges we ran into

The time constraint, also because this was my first time coding a game with a time constraint, I was started out a little too ambitious for what I thought I would be able to complete in the allotted time. This was my first time also creating all assets for my game so this also caused me to underestimate how difficult and time-consuming visual design would be.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I finished and completed the game, as well I can say all assets were drawn by me.

What we learned

Polished skills in learning to use Godot, and design aspects of world-building from the ground-up. Also how tile sets work and sprite sheets, in order to create 2D animations and art sets.

What's next for Run_Kitty_Run

Adding levels, creating a system where the game system changes, more world building.
