Inspiration

The family of one of our team members has a history of Alzheimer's disease, and we know how important it is to be able to spot signs of cognitive decline early, so it can be better treated and prepared for. Our team has a passion for making games and other fun apps, and it is well-known that practicing cognitive tasks often not only keeps the brain active, but can be an early indicator of cognitive decline. That is why our team decided to take a mix of these topics, taking an often tenuous and stressful situation and hopefully making it a little brighter!

What it does

Rocket Recall is a web application that is meant to be visited often! Users log in and play daily cognitive games. The purpose of our application is that over time, as users make our daily games a habit and more data on their scores is collected, a downward trajectory in performance can be a big signaler of cognitive decline and an early sign of neuro degeneracy. Our users can send their data to their family or health care providers, so physicians can get the data they need to track progress and screen for issues.

How we built it

We used React in order to create a web application, focused in Javascript, HTML, and CSS. Our brain games are all translations of tasks that are well-studied to be good indicators of cognitive defficiencies.

Challenges we ran into

Getting our idea itself was a challenge! We spent many hours brainstorming and planning for something that was both simple, fun, helpful, and in line with what this hackathon is about! After that, we started off using Vue, but after a while we ran into many more issues and had to restart in React. Learning React as an alternative was tricky for the team, and writing tasks/games in javascript was new for us too! However, it was a great learning experience and we are so glad to have done it!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the usefulness and replayability of our app. On top of the games we have, it is easy to add in more and have an ever-expanding library! Most especially, we are glad that this actually takes a concept and makes it both fun and helpful. That is the intersection we strive for! With this app, physicians and users both win, while having fun at the same time!

What we learned

Alzheimer's is a serious neurodegenerative disease, and having a way to spot it early is incredibly important. That doesn't mean it has to be boring! Our games are meant to both screen for early signs of Alzheimer's or other forms of cognitive decline over long periods of time, and train your brain against it! Practicing cognitive puzzles has been shown to help tremendously for patients young and old, and can be very fun too! Making these brain games a habit helps all parties and is a force for good! The best part is, you don't have to compare to anyone except yourself! So let's blast off for health and better lifestyles.

What's next for Rocket Recall

One of the best and most exciting parts about our creation is its expandability! The games we currently have are just a start, as we can implement more and more that can shuffle daily, providing more data and more replayability for the user. On top of that, our data collection and manipulation can easily become more complex. We could attach a neural model that can detect changes in scores far before humans can, and we can make our graphs and long-term collection more sophisticated and helpful! What we made can easily serve as a building block for much more. Happy brain training!
