Inspiration
In today's fast-paced world, safety and sustainability on the road are paramount. We're driven by the vision of creating an unparalleled driving experience that harmonizes convenience, eco-consciousness, and safety. Here’s how data informed our approach:
Combatting Distraction-Induced Crashes: Roadside's voice-controlled navigation reduces device interaction, aiming to lower the 1.6 million annual crashes caused by phone use while driving. Aiding Emergency Response Times: With each minute's delay decreasing survival chances in emergencies by 7%-10%, Roadside's efficient routing can speed up emergency responses and save lives. Reducing Carbon Emissions: Roadside optimizes routes to produce 20% fewer carbon emissions, promoting eco-friendly driving by balancing efficiency and environmental impact. Alleviating Traffic Congestion: Roadside offers real-time route choices that can reduce traffic jams by up to 29.8%, improving driving experience by suggesting less congested, albeit slightly longer, alternatives.
What it does
Have you ever wished to talk to your GPS? Introducing 'Roadside' – a cutting-edge voice-controlled navigation system. It's not just a tool; it's your intelligent co-pilot. Roadside brings together eco-friendly traffic optimization and hands-free route adjustment, ensuring your journey is not just quick, but also green. With distraction-free communication and alerts for hazardous conditions, we prioritize your safety in every mile you travel.
How we built it
Utilizing OpenAI's GPT-4-Turbo and text-to-speech technologies, we crafted an interactive audio interface that seamlessly connects to GPT-4, powered by our Action Engine and Tasks Master backend. These components work in tandem with INRIX APIs, Mapbox GL JS, and Tomorrow.io for parking, traffic, and hazard alerts, enabling dynamic route adjustment and enhanced driver safety. Furthermore, our toolkit included GitHub for team collaboration, Figma and FigJam for UI prototyping and design, Postman and Insomnia for API testing, and Next.js as our robust web framework, ensuring a seamless development process and a user-friendly final product.
Challenges we ran into
- Frontend-Backend Integration: One of our key challenges was integrating the frontend with the backend efficiently within the given timeframe. This required meticulous coordination and extensive testing.
- Reliable Speech-to-Text Functionality: We conducted rigorous testing under various noisy conditions to ensure the accuracy of speech-to-text conversion.
- Incorporating Intermediate Stops: Adding stops along routes was another hurdle. We worked on developing a system that could dynamically adjust routes without compromising the overall efficiency and user experience -- ensuring that the route stayed optimized and drivable with multiple stops was a major concern that we tried to resolve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're thrilled to say that Roadside not only works but also exceeds our initial expectations. Adapting cutting edge OpenAI technology released just a week ago and multiple data-driven, Inrix-based APIs, Roadside has capabilities that even renowned assistants like Siri and Tesla Cars don't possess--such as predicting traffic according to weather conditions. We pioneered the integration of and application of LLMs for highly accurate road condition prediction and navigation based on real-time weather hazard alerts.
What we learned
- The Impact of Data-Driven Solutions: By utilizing data on distraction-induced crashes and emergency response times, we learned how data-driven solutions like Roadside can tangibly save lives and reduce environmental impact.
- The Challenge of Complex System Integration: Successfully combining multiple technologies, from OpenAI's GPT-4-Turbo to INRIX APIs using a wide variety of development tools and frameworks, was a learning curve. We discovered the complexities of integrating various systems into a cohesive, user-friendly interface.
- Advancing Beyond Existing Technology: Our journey with Roadside taught us that there's always room for innovation in cutting-edge technology. By surpassing the capabilities of existing assistants like Siri and Tesla, we learned the importance of continual innovation and the pursuit of solutions that address unmet needs in technology and road safety.
What's next for Roadside
Since Roadside is voice based, it envisions a fully automated hands free driving experience By predicting a potential traffic jam ahead, Roadside will be able to suggest a route that is less congested, even if it is slightly longer. Up next is making it more easily integratable with other systems.
