Inspiration
Covid-19 has presented a lot of unique challenges for students and working adults everywhere. With our offices and classrooms taking over our homes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate work and life. We knew we wanted to solve this problem, and after watching panels about Women in Tech and Diversity and Inclusion, we were especially inspired to promote self-care inside of our project. As two females in the Computer Science Strand of the STEM program at our school, we understand the sense of not belonging that comes with being a part of this heavily male-dominated industry. Especially for girls and women in this field, we need to be able to remind ourselves that our opinions and skills are valued. Rise aims to promote this sense of self-confidence and self-care while simultaneously helping you to keep track of your life.
What it does
Rise provides a way to organize the things you need to do in a visually pleasing calendar format, and allows you to edit the tasks you need to complete. It also features inspirational quotes and health tips to keep thee user healthy both mentally and physically. Finally, Rise has a journal feature where the user can log what made them happy that day, something they think they did well, or something they're grateful for. The journal automatically saves these entries so the user can refer back to them and keep them thinking positively everyday.
How we built it
We used a combination of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS in Repl.it and Node, and used Mongodb to host the database that collects the journal information and dates. We used code from the educational section of w3schools.com for the calendar template and to-do list template.
Challenges we ran into and accomplishments that we're proud of
As beginner coders participating in our first ever hackathon, everything was new to us. We've only taken two years of computer science classes at our school, and were very new to combining multiple languages in one project, so that was definitely a challenge for us.
What we learned
We learned how to use multiple languages in one project. Beyond coding skills, we also learned to be patient with ourselves when developing our skills and confidence in the skills we were already proficient in thanks to some of the workshops and chats from the event.
What's next for Rise
We aim to make the site personal to the user with log-in information to protect the user's privacy as well as offer different themes for the site to make it customizable to the user. We also want to include deadlines for tasks and show a new quote or fact every day under the Daily Reminders.
