Inspiration

  • We see headlines about crashes, bull markets, and trading frenzies, but most educational tools teach investing through boring hypotheticals or risk-free paper trading in today's market. We realized that the best way to learn isn't from a textbook but from actually experiencing things. What if students could go back and live through the 2008 financial crisis? What if they could decide whether to buy Tesla stock before it exploded, or choose whether to panic and sell during the COVID-19 crash in March 2020?
  • Since we can't send students back in time, we built Rewind to let them experience these moments using real data and real news headlines to see how their investments played out.

What it does

  • Rewind drops students into pivotal moments like the 2008 Housing Crisis or COVID-19 Pandemic with 10,000 in virtual money. As events unfold day-by-day, they make real buy/sell decisions while reading authentic news headlines from those exact dates and watch their portfolio rise or fall based on actual historical stock prices. Students can ask the AI for advice when they are stuck, which will offer guidance based on the news headline and historical period.
  • Once students feel ready after their learning, they can join a Live Stock Simulator using a classroom code, where they can compete against other students to see how much they can make day trading on the stock market. They can see a live leaderboard with each student's portfolio, and ask the AI chatbot for advice on what they should invest in based on 2026 data.

How we built it

  • We built the platform using Javascript for main application logic, chatbot, API integration, and data.
  • We used HTML for the page structure and UI
  • CSS was used for styling
  • Python was used for backend and server deployment

Challenges we ran into

  • We had trouble with how Cursor would sometimes edit other parts of our project when we only wanted it to edit one part, so we had to get better at giving specific prompts that are more direct and clear.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We are proud of creating a project that can help educate other students on a topic that isn't usually taught in schools, as students typically have to learn the stock market on their own.

What we learned

  • We learned how anyone can create a coding project with the help of AI, as it can really bring your ideas to life without much prior experience.

What's next for Rewind

  • We hope to add more historical periods, such as the Great Depression, and include historical periods during U.S presidencies to see how their choices led to effects in the market
