ReWear: Sustainable Shopping Chrome Extension
About the Project
ReWear is a Google Chrome Extension that lets users view sustainable alternatives while shopping online, either through secondhand market picks or new options made sustainably and near the user to cut down on carbon emissions from shipping. Our solution balances fighting against overconsumption and making intentional purchases that users will wear repeatedly. Ultimately, the most sustainable fashion choices are the ones that'll see a lifetime of wear before ending up forgotten in the back of a closet or bottom of a landfill.
Inspiration
ReWear was inspired by the need for more sustainable shopping practices in today's consumer-driven society. With the rise of fast fashion and its detrimental impact on the environment, we wanted to create a tool that encourages users to consider secondhand options.
What I Learned
Throughout the development of ReWear, I gained a deeper understanding of Chrome extension architecture, image recognition technologies, and integrating APIs for real-time data retrieval. I also learned about the importance of user experience design in ensuring a seamless interaction with the extension.
How I Built the Project
We built ReWear using JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, and other languages. The core functionality includes:
- Image uploading for product matches.
- A search radius feature to find local secondhand items.
- Integration with databases like Facebook Marketplace and Depop to source secondhand options.
- An interactive interface displaying cost and environmental savings.
Challenges Faced
Some challenges I faced included:
- Ensuring accurate image matching with existing database items, which required fine-tuning the image recognition algorithms.
- Handling asynchronous requests efficiently to provide a smooth user experience without delays.
- Balancing the design for functionality and aesthetic appeal, making sure the extension is not only useful but also engaging for users.
Conclusion
ReWear aims to make sustainable shopping easy and accessible, empowering users to make more environmentally conscious decisions while shopping. I'm excited to see how this tool can contribute to reducing waste and promoting secondhand purchasing!
