Inspiration

Food waste is a critical global issue. Businesses throw away surplus food daily while food banks struggle to meet demand. We wanted to bridge this gap—making it simple for businesses to donate food quickly and for food banks to access fresh supplies reliably.

What it does

ReskuFood is a platform connecting businesses with surplus food to food banks in need. Businesses post available donations in seconds, specify pickup windows and locations, and track impact. Food banks browse listings, reserve items, and coordinate pickups. The platform automatically tracks donated items, estimates meals provided, and calculates dollar value impact.

How we built it

We built ReskuFood as a single-page web application using:

-HTML5 for hypertext markup -Tailwind CSS for UI -JavaScript for client-side logic -Browser LocalStorage for data (users, listings, reservations)

The app supports two user roles—businesses and food banks—with separate dashboards and workflows.

Challenges we ran into

Fixing bugs and adding real time syncing between businesses and food banks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Designed a clean, accessible interface that solves a modern issue.

What we learned

Frontend-only apps can deliver surprising functionality and are great for creating a webpage while under time pressure.

What's next for ReskuFood

-Backend integration for real authentication, persistent data, and reliability -SMS/Email notifications for pickup reminders and reservation updates -Map integration for location-based discovery and logistics -Rating system for businesses and food banks to build trust -Mobile app for easier field access during pickups -Reporting dashboard for impact metrics and analytics -Integration with food bank networks to reach more organizations
