Inspiration
Me and my friends are aware of the dangers our waste cause to the marine life as we have read many news articles about turtles and other marine animals suffocating in plastic bags that humans throw into the ocean. We want to raise awareness about this issue and reduce such incidents by promoting reduction of waste generated through a fun and interesting game that can be enjoyed by both the young and the old.
What it does
The game is called "Rescue the turtle!" and it is a maze where the player needs to avoid the walls of plastics and make their way to the end. This promotes reduction of waste generated to work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 ( Responsible Consumption and Production) by raising awareness of the harm our waste can do to the nature, especially to the marine life.
How we built it
Firstly, we made the turtle character which blinks by plotting it on a point of the micro-bit display. Secondly, we planned out the maze route and made an array of the maze. Third, we programmed the buttons a and b and logo up and down to allow the player to control the movement of the turtle. Fourth, we plotted the maze out and programmed the maze to allow the player to move around the maze. Fifth, we added the losing and winning strings to be displayed.
Challenges we ran into
We spent quite a lot of time coming up with the game idea and had troubles getting the turtle be able to move around inside the maze.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we managed to get the game to work as we intended and that we all put our best efforts into creating it.
What we learned
We have learnt more about the UNSDGs and their aims and programming of the micro-bit.
What's next for Rescue the turtle!
In the future, we may modify the maze and add different levels to increase the difficulty and make the game more interesting.
