Inspiration

The UK has many cars, and cars are a leading cause of pollution. We were inspired by the UK's goal of reducing carbon emissions by 2050, and the idea of people reusing their own cars to make them more sustainable instead of buying new cars.

What it does

The aim of the project is to make smart cars accessible to everyone by embedding small devices into cars that monitor air pollution, mileage, and time spent idling, and feed the data into an app that provides users with advice on how to drive smarter. The app also gamifies the concept by including a leaderboard where users can compete with friends and family to see who is more sustainable.

How we built it

We used Marvel, a website used for designing apps and presenting the design as if it was actually used on a phone, to simulate the design of our app, and TinkerCad to build a 3D model of the devices used, such as a GPS monitor and air pollution monitor for collecting information that would then be fed back into the app and presented to the user.

Challenges we ran into

We did not have enough time to build an actual working app, and we did not have the knowledge or the required equipment to build a physical model of our device, as it needed parts such as gas monitors for the air pollution detector.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to simulate a working app in Marvel, and of creating the 3D design of our device, as none of us had used 3D modelling in TinkerCad before, and it was quite difficult.

What we learned

We learnt how to use software such as Marvel and TinkerCad, and how to work in a team efficiently by assigning tasks so that everyone had an equal workload. We also learnt the small ways everyone could reduce pollution and be more sustainable when driving, such as driving slower and redcuing idling.

What's next for Renew

We plan to form partnerships with manufacturing companies, so when our clients are ready to buy a new car, they can give in their old cars so the companies can use their parts. This will also give the clients a discount on the new car they wish to buy. We will also use the companies to manufacture the devices that we plan on installing in cars.
