Inspiration
About 1 in 5 people suffer from long-term health impacts after the initial infection of Covid-19, termed "long Covid", symptoms include lung scarring, cardiovascular complications, dizziness, headache, and etc.
Googling a remedy for a symptom always returns millions of results. Bogus remedies, myths, and fake news can cost lives. Some claimed these remedies are effective for relieving certain symptoms, but many of those "natural" or home remedies are not backed by science or proven by clinical data.
In light of this, we are building "Remedious", a two-way platform to bridge the gap between the general public and academia, and establish evidence-based remedies.
What it does
Users can report if they have any long Covid symptoms and remedies they are taking. They can feedback on whether a particular remedy worked and the amount and frequency they did it. The system will compare the severity and frequency of the symptom before and after taking the remedy, with reference to their health conditions and demographic data (gender/ age/ ethnic background), and this information will be available for researchers to do analysis (after de-identification of data).
The app also includes a discord bot that extracts validated information from reliable sources and presents it in a simple and easy-to-understand manner for the public, and provides information on whether a remedy is backed by science.
Impact
Providing validated and reliable information for the public
Educating the public
Speed up scientific discoveries
Features
Interface for general public and patients suffering from long covid
--Register & sign in--
- Users can sign up with their email address
--Onboarding--
Users will then fill in some personal information including age, ethnic background, gender, any existing health conditions, and medications
Users will then need to report if they have any covid related symptoms, tested for covid, and received any treatments
Users need to report if they suffer from any long term health impacts if they tested positive before/ recovered from covid
For those suffering from long term health impacts, they will be asked to input (1) frequency & severity of the symptom and (2) if they are undertaking any prescriptions from a doctor or home remedies
--Home page--
On the home page, users will receive notifications to update the frequency and severity of symptom weekly
They can search for validated remedies using the search bar
Discord bot for general public and patients suffering from long covid
looks up remedy
looks up symptom
looks up general information related to long covid
Interface for scientist and healthcare professionals
--Register & sign in--
- Scientists can register with their institutional email address
--Home page--
- Scientists can explore data using the data visualization dashboard
--Database--
- Scientists can export de-identified data for further analysis
Testing
How we built it
UI design using Figma
Front-end development using Flutter
Backend development using Flask
Discord bot using Python
Database using MySQL
Hosting via Firebase
Challenges we ran into
We are an international team with 3 time zones, not all of us are awake at the same time. We overcame this by effective planning and communication via GitHub kanban board and discord.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a functional prototype and a bot!
What we learned
Some of us have never used Flutter before, and we spent a lot of time learning the basics.
What's next for Remedious
New Features
Information hub
- The app would extract validated information from reliable sources (e.g. academic seminars/ journals) and present it in a simple and easy-to-understand manner for the public, and provide information on whether a remedy is backed by science.
Cross-check
- The app is currently based on user self-report. In the future, we would like to partner up with national health systems or clinics for health data
Expand to other illnesses
- Expand to include remedies for other illnesses
