HelloHacks:
HelloHacks is a hackathon designed to open opportunities for tech and product enthusiasts to collaboratively develop creative solutions for streamlines like fashion, health, and education. This hackathon happens within a limited timeframe, 36 hours, where participants form teams to work on projects ranging from frontend to backend software development, providing students with first-hand experience in app design through coding and UI/UX design.
Accomplishments
- Awarded 1st Place in the Fashion and Retail stream
- Designed an interactive application, ReLend, by applying extensive skills in both Figma and JavaScript
- Implemented the Maps JavaScript API as a location tracker for the product maximizing user-friendly experience
What is ReLend?
Relend stems from a desire to address the environmental impact of fast fashion and overconsumption. With the growing demand for sustainable solutions, we aimed to create a platform where people could access luxury items without the need for outright ownership, promoting a culture of sharing rather than wasteful buying.
What it does
Relend is a rental platform that connects individuals who own luxury fashion items with users seeking to borrow them. This exchange fosters a more sustainable approach to fashion by reducing waste, maximizing the utility of high-quality items, and offering affordable access to luxury fashion for all.
Process
We built the backend using JavaScript, ensuring a robust infrastructure to support secure transactions, user authentication, and smooth communication between lenders and renters. To enhance the user experience, we implemented the Google Maps API, allowing users to easily locate nearby items available for rent. The interface was designed as a Figma prototype, centering around user-friendly features such as intuitive navigation, detailed item listings, and a streamlined booking process. The focus was on creating a seamless experience that prioritized accessibility and simplicity for both lenders and renters.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was balancing user trust and security while creating a platform for high-value exchanges. Developing features like identity verification and fair rental policies required significant thought to ensure both parties felt secure. Additionally, building a scalable and visually appealing interface was a technical hurdle. With the additional features, ReLend became a platform that addresses sustainability and bridges a gap in the luxury fashion industry.
What's next for ReLend
Moving forward, Relend aims to expand its user base and partnerships with brands to encourage participation in the circular economy. Future updates could include AI-driven recommendations, more robust insurance for items, and eco-friendly delivery options to further enhance the app’s impact.
