Inspiration

Drag performers help foster “community and connection” in Queer spaces as artists, advocates, and community builders. Sadly mainstream social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have silenced the voices of drag artists, many are at the mercy of moderation algorithms and ever-changing rules that unfairly target LGBTQ+ members of the social network. Many drag performers have to keep backup accounts in case their main accounts are blocked by algorithms, this can cause harm in terms of breaking down community connection and also to drag artists livelihoods.

What it does

The concept of the app is to decentralize the queer community away from mainstream social media platforms. Into a collectively owned community space, beginning with Queer performance artists being able to book and promote their shows without the need for corporate owned social network.

How we built it

With a lot of JavaScript - Node, ReactJS, and TypeScript. and a little bit of CSS to make it pretty.

Challenges we ran into

We had difficulty with a steep learning curve but were able to implement firebase in the project to persist data, we also hosted the app on google cloud.

Also found it difficult to stay engaged with each other over remote working vs being together at a Hackathon, looking forward to returning together soon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We came into this hackathon wanting to make an app that would tackle a problem for our Queer community, and we are proud of this idea we came up with. The original logo by one of our group members was excellent as well !

What we learned

That there is always so much to learn about coding. But also F Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many other centralized corporate social networks for censoring Queer artists.

What's next for Reign on Me

As we developed the concept we feel this app would be a perfect candidate for a "Web3" app. Because its shifting away from centrally controlled corporate website, to something decentralized and community owned, blockchain technology could be used here, artists could sell NFTs, accept crypto as tips, and the community could be secured from trolls using the blockchain.
