Inspiration
In our generation, smartphone usage in class has become such a strong distraction to students that teachers seem to be losing hope in doing anything about it. Each of our team members can admit to engaging in this bad habit ourselves, and have felt it's impact on our education. But we wanted to be able to see that impact exactly.
When Apple released their Screen Time feature, it helped make many users aware of how much time every day they were spending on their phones, encouraging them to reduce their usage in general. Using Shortcuts, another Apple feature, re:focus similarly tracks users' phone usage in each of their school classes, when they really shouldn't be on their phones at all. By summarizing this data in combination with the trend of their own grades, re:focus aims to guide users to full self-awareness of their habits and spark a similar intrinsic motivation for change.
What it does
Users log into the re:focus website through Google, after which they are led through a simple tutorial on how to setup the exiting Shortcuts app on their iPhone to connect to their account. Through a calendar page, users will be able to input their weekly class schedule and grades for each of their current courses will be collected. Over time, the passively tracked screen time during class and grade trends will be displayed on the Analytics page as a series of dynamic graphs.
