Inspiration
Theme: Sustainability The negative impact of fast fashion is often not covered enough despite the enormous challenge it presents to the environment. A single shirt can take approximately 2700 liters of water to be created. According to the World Economic Forum, an estimated 79 billion cubic meters of fresh water are consumed annually to satisfy increased demand. Furthermore, it is estimated that the fashion industry could be responsible for over 25% of the carbon emissions that will result in a temperature rise of 2℃ by 2050. Online clothes reselling platforms present an innovative solution to this problem. With the second-hand clothing market accounting for approximately of 10% of today's industry, it provides a much more sustainable and practical alternative. Our app seeks to capitalize on this movement by combining second hand clothes shopping with the attention-grabbing nature of Instagram reels.
What it does
Our app allows users to upload reels showcasing the item they wish to sell, and reach out to other individuals if they are interested in buying another product. The usage of reels adds an extra degree of security as sellers, since online selling platforms tend to attract fraud while also making the product unique and fun for the consumer to use.
How we built it
We built it using React.js, Node.js, and Firebase. We used React to design the front-end and conducted database operations with Firebase. Furthermore, we used Node.js to handle server-side instructions when it came to uploading and storing files on the server. We also used Figma throughout the brainstorming process to visualize and initialize UI designs.
Challenges we ran into
Many of us experience were relatively inexperienced in using React on a large-scale project, especially when using it in conjunction with firebase. Therefore, we took the help of mentors and YouTube tutorials to make the project.
Where do we see the product going forward
In the future, we hope to add more features including messaging (which we were unable to implement this time due to an issue with the database). We would also love to add more aesthetic designs going forward, as our pages had a lot of white space.
