Problem Addressed

The growing waste management crisis in urbanized environments stems from the rapid accumulation of improperly disposed waste, exacerbated by unclear municipal guidelines and a lack of public education on proper disposal practices. This leads to polluted cities, overburdened systems, and diminished quality of life. Despite existing efforts, limited citizen participation and insufficient motivation make waste reduction a low priority, further compounding the problem. Not addressing these issues leads to the continued degradation of the quality of life of these people.

Intended Audience

Recycla is designed for urban residents, including individuals, families, and communities, who seek a simpler, more enjoyable, and more effective way to manage waste. It targets environmentally conscious citizens looking to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to cleaner surroundings. Additionally, the app is valuable for local governments and organizations aiming to optimize waste management systems and foster public engagement in eco-friendly initiatives.

How Solution Was Developed

Recycla was developed using the Design Thinking methodology to create a user-centered solution for urban waste management. The app was conceptualized and designed collaboratively as a result of careful planning and extensive effort.. Key features such as the Integrated Waste Map, AI-powered waste segregation tool, and gamified incentives were conceptualized based on the team's personal insights, and was wireframed using Figma. The team integrated their personal experience to cater a service that would appeal to the average user, as they are the ones capable of improving the waste management systems of the cities they inhibit.

Team & Their Roles

Recycla is the product of four students from the Philippines: Jaron Pomer, Raj Tolentino, Michael Tan, and Erin Tolentino. United by their passion for creating innovative solutions to global challenges, the team worked collaboratively to conceptualize and develop Recycla. Jaron Pomer, serving as the CEO, spearheaded the development, design, and user interface, as well as the wireframing of the app, with Michael Tan providing essential support. Erin Tolentino took charge of research and ideation, working closely with Raj Tolentino to refine the app’s core concepts. Together, the team brought Recycla to life using Figma, applying the principles of Design Thinking throughout the process. This approach enabled them to create a user-centered solution tailored to address the complexities of waste management systems in urban environments. Their combined efforts culminated in an innovative app designed to empower communities and promote sustainable practices.
