Inspiration
Living on the west coast, it's not hard to see the effects of improper waste disposal, especially things that can be recycled. In school, we're often told to recycle, but once that pile of bottles in your room grows day by day, how will you clean out all of it?
What it does
We have decided to make a webapp that helps you keep track of all the things you want to recycle, and where you would want to recycle it. Implementing a sign-in system, you can securely keep track of all the recyclable items in your home. In addition, a map marks down all recycling stations, from big to small, in your vicinity.
How we built it
We used Google Firebase to store the user login info and the Google Maps API to add the map into the webapp. Everything else is coded by us.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing the google maps api was a big challenge, and figuring out how to check for login information was also very hard. We couldn't figure out how to query user input for the Google Maps so we hard coded in some recycling stations in the US.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of fixing a majority of the problems we ran into such as the Google Maps API and how to interact with search results. In addition, the fact that we built this app with these functions in two days is also something we're proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to implement Google API's into websites using Google Cloud Services and advanced our knowledge in styling websites.
What's next for Recy.cl
In the future, we plan on making this app able to find recycling stations near the user instead of writing them down ourselves.
