Inspiration
As college students, we're always looking for ways to not waste food. Using up the ingredients that are already in your house helps with this, so we decided to create a website that will help students like us, or other people in general, find recipes online so they can use up the rest of their ingredients.
What it does
After the website prompts the user to enter ingredients they found in their kitchen, it shows them a list of recipes found online that include those ingredients listed. It also shows the number of ingredients the user is missing that will allow them to follow the recipe.
How we built it
We started by delegating the right people for each part of the project. Then we researched the necessary tools needed to see our vision through. One of our team members focused on creating a design for the website and making it functional, while the others worked on getting the API and creating a code that utilizes it. In the end, we connected the front and backend codes to create the final website.
Challenges we ran into
Being our first Hackathon and first project ever, we faced many challenges. The main issues we faced include learning how to use APIs, learning new languages, and learning how to work with the frontend and backend code. Also, we had to learn how to manage our time under a lot of pressure and time constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of being able to overcome these challenges and create a functional project by the deadline. We weren't able to implement everything we wanted to, but we are still happy with the outcome, as we managed to learn a lot from the whole process.
What we learned
We learned a combination of things while making this project: we learned how to create a website and the coding languages necessary (html, css, javascript, ejs) to create it; how to apply an API into our code; how to connect the frontend and backend codes; how to work together with our teammates; and how to collaborate with others and get all the information needed to make the project functional.
But it was also all about the friends we made along the way :)
What's next for RecipeHacks Website
We aim to implement more features such as a budget indicator, images of the ingredients used in the recipes, the names of the ingredients used, and links that go to actual recipes found online.
