Inspiration
People infected with diseases worldwide spend a lot of their time in boredom. They have to visit the hospital, get several shots in one day, multiple times a month. This is time consuming, especially if the patient is a school kid. Instead of spending time in the hospital playing video games or watching movies, kids could be exposed to reading to further develop their skills at a young age. This provides equality for education for all kids in hospitals despite those setbacks. ReadForMe does exactly that.
What it does
Our group created the ReadForMe initiative, in which child volunteers read to sick children in hospitals to boost mental health during these socially isolating periods. Why should a child volunteer? In an instant, children may connect with other children. We created this to provide the children in the hospital an opportunity to discover their passion of reading. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a life-long relationship. A chance to go through one more injection, chemo treatment, or surgery. We're the ReadForMe team, and we're here to make a difference in the life of a sick child. One by one, one by one, one by one, one by one, one by one
How we built it
We used firebase api, firebase database, and firebase authentication along with html, css and javascript in order to make the website.
Challenges we ran into
Making the Volunteer sign up functionality. It is still not complete, however we learned a lot while trying to fix this error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making the website!
What we learned
Refreshed our knowledge about js, html, css and learned tons about firebase.
What's next for ReadForMe
Improving the UI, adding a text-to-speech functionality so instead of waiting for someone, users can directly upload a pdf and listen to it. Adding other audiobooks.
