Inspiration
We were inspired by the heartbreaking stories of everyday Canadians like Sarah - a retiree who used her life savings to buy a small condo as an investment, only to lose over $30,000 to a problematic tenant and face 10 months of legal battles. With Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board facing a backlog of over 38,000 cases and small landlords losing an average of $10,000 per failed tenancy, we realized the rental system is fundamentally broken. We saw an opportunity to level the playing field for Canada's hundreds of thousands of small landlords who lack the sophisticated screening tools available to large property management companies.
What it does
Renty is a landlord empowerment platform that creates accountability in the rental market through verified tenant reviews and comprehensive screening tools. Landlords can rate and review tenants on objective criteria like payment history and property care - but only after uploading proof of their lease agreement. Our premium service provides in-depth tenant background reports including credit scores, public records searches, and web-scraped information. Think "Yelp meets CarFax" for the rental market, but with a crucial verification layer that prevents fake reviews and ensures data integrity.
How we built it
We developed Renty using a scalable cloud architecture with secure document handling at its core. The app features OCR technology for lease verification, data aggregation APIs for background checks, and a privacy-by-design framework compliant with Canada's PIPEDA regulations. Our "Lease Verification Engine" serves as our trust mechanism - no lease, no review. We implemented encrypted storage for all documents and built content moderation systems to prevent discriminatory reviews while focusing on objective, fact-based assessments.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was balancing landlord empowerment with tenant privacy rights and anti-discrimination requirements. We had to carefully design review templates that capture useful information while preventing subjective or potentially discriminatory content. Technical challenges included building secure document upload systems, implementing reliable OCR for lease verification, and creating web scraping capabilities that respect privacy laws and require proper consent mechanisms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We've created a unique solution that addresses a multi-billion dollar problem affecting millions of Canadians. Our lease verification system is truly innovative - it's our "moat" that differentiates us from simple review sites or basic screening services. We're particularly proud of building a platform that benefits both good landlords AND good tenants by creating a merit-based rental ecosystem where excellent tenants can build portable rental reputations.
What we learned
We learned that solving real-world problems requires balancing competing interests - landlord protection vs. tenant privacy, comprehensive screening vs. discrimination prevention. The rental market's pain points run much deeper than we initially realized, with systemic issues in Canada's legal system creating massive financial risks for everyday investors. We also discovered the importance of building trust through verification rather than just creating another anonymous review platform.
What's next for Renty
Our immediate focus is expanding our verification technology and building strategic partnerships with property management companies and landlord associations. We're planning to implement AI-powered content moderation, develop tenant response features for fairness, and explore integration with existing property management software. Long-term, we see Renty becoming the standard for rental market transparency across Canada, with potential expansion to other markets facing similar landlord-tenant information asymmetries. We're also exploring subscription models and partnerships with credit bureaus to further enhance our screening capabilities.
