Inspiration

The inspiration for this project came from lived experiences and research, All members of our team like book reading, however reading books is time-consuming and readers might loose interest while reading. Research also proves that the human brain only reads the first and last letter of a word and skips the rest. Therefore, a new reader's mind is trained and over time their reading pace increases enabling them to be fast readers. Our project can also be used by students who have textbooks to read at school and want to speed up the process.

What it does

The solution, “RAPID READS”. Our solution Rapid Reads makes the reading experience seamless. Users can scan the text they want to read from their device and choose from different speeds to read depending on their ability.

How we built it

Rapid Reads was brought to life through a combination of strategic choices. Utilizing Tempo Labs, we crafted the frontend using React with Next.js for a dynamic user interface. For deployment, we turned to the robust capabilities of Google Cloud Compute Engine. This backend deployment ensured scalability and optimal performance during reading training sessions. Our iterative development process involved research, testing, and user feedback loops, resulting in a finely-tuned and user-friendly solution for faster reading.

We meticulously fine-tuned the fixed-position word display technique to optimize the balance between speed and comprehension. The app was built with a user-centric mindset, ensuring that it remains intuitive and adaptable for users at various reading levels.

Challenges we ran into

Building Rapid Reads came with its set of challenges. One major hurdle was finding the sweet spot between reading speed and comprehension. Through numerous trials and adjustments, we navigated this challenge to ensure that users could read quickly while retaining a deep understanding of the content.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in developing a tool that addresses a common barrier to reading enjoyment. We are also proud to create this project in a short span of time. Our teamwork and skills made this experience enjoyable for us.

What we learned

The development of Rapid Reads was a rich learning experience. We gained insights into the nuances of reading psychology and user engagement strategies. Through the development phase, we also learned how to use Tempo Labs and Google Cloud Platform.

What's Next for Rapid Reads:

In our ongoing journey, Rapid Reads is set to evolve with exciting features. Users can soon enjoy the convenience of scanning pages directly into the app, enhancing versatility in reading. We're also collaborating with public libraries, offering users the ability to import a diverse range of books effortlessly. Taking it a step further, our upcoming AI integration will provide personalized recommendations based on individual interests, ensuring a tailored and enjoyable reading experience. These developments showcase our commitment to continually elevate Rapid Reads, making it a comprehensive platform that adapts to users' preferences and transforms the reading experience. Our journey is fuelled by the goal of making reading accessible and enjoyable for newcomers.
