Inspiration

Our team was motivated to create the platform Rally, after learning that the biggest ever opinion poll on climate change, for the UN Development Programme, found two-thirds saying it is a “global emergency”. We realize that a substantial majority of people want government action and policy change on climate change but lack the knowledge nor resources to take action.

What it does

Rally is important in not only educating the public but also in making opportunities for change easily accessible and comprehensible. Rally enables users to join group chats with people in their local area to discuss and voice their perspective on climate change initiatives. Our app also includes supportive administrators in the chat feature who assist in raising awareness about various topics for discussion. Furthermore, Rally users can discover latest petitions and become involved in the ones they choose in order to create immediate impact.

How we built it

We used the Django framework and vanilla javascript and css. We also used the websockets API and the geolocation API to get the zip code of the user.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge we faced was to integrate the more complicated petition features of our app with the least amount of text or visual disturbance as possible. It was important that we kept our app user-friendly, and visually appealing while still encompassing different aspects. Although we have advanced features running in the background, in the foreground we tried to keep the UX neat.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of experimenting and figuring out how to use the websockets api with django. We are also proud of being able to create an efficient database schema that made development efficient and intuitive. We are also proud of our work ethics and the quality of the app we managed to finish given the time.

What we learned

We learned how to more efficiently design a database, read and understand apis, and how to work under real pressure.

What's next for Rally

We aim to create a positive change by implementing Rally in the real world and hope to deploy this to real life users soon. Rally would love to reach users from different countries to enable them to make an impact through petitions and policy change within their local communities.
