Most of us who worked on the project had limited experience with Unity, but this was a great learning experience even if the end result is a little unpolished.
GAMEPLAY
The core gameplay loop is quite simple. You click this button on the middle of the screen to roll a number 1-3 and move that many spaces on the board. If you land on a black space, an enemy appears and you must fight it to the death. The enemy that you end up fighting changes depending on what side of the board you’re on. The south side has goblins, the west side golems, the north side ghosts, and the east side dark knights. If you land on a green space, you can pick up a random item and get a small boost to your stats. If you land on a blue space, which you will always land on before moving on to the next side of the board, your character will rest and restore all of his health.
COMBAT
Combat works in turns. The player picks 5 attacks to do on the enemy in succession. The enemy then reveals his intended attacks which are generated using a random number generator. Whoever counters more of the other’s moves gets to hit for damage. If there is an equal number of moves countered, both parties parry the attack and no damage is dealt. While on paper this means the player is completely randomly attacking a target, in practice it still feels engaging because you have the illusion of needing skill to beat him. You have the control of picking what moves you can do, even if the end result is completely random.
FUTURE FEATURES
There was a lot more features we wanted to implement into the game, however due to our limited experience with Unity and lack of time to learn how to implement such features, many had to be left behind. Notably, the art and graphics is still a work in progress. The assets we ended up using for the art were found on Google and modified in photoshop. We wanted to add better 3D models. Instead of having a little castle moving around the board, we wanted to have an animated knight to represent the player. We also wanted fights to be in 3D with the camera zooming in on the board as an enemy appeared, still keeping the same combat system. We also wanted to add a shop system so you could buy items you needed after the fights you take.
