Inspiration
Many people have sensitive skin and using the wrong beauty/sanitation products harms their skin. Even the ones who don't have sensitive skin are negatively impacted by these products. We wanted to prevent this issue by making an app that would tell the user how harmful the chemicals in these products are.
What it does
It takes a photo of the chemicals used in the product and evaluates how harmful these are to the body and environment. It shows a rating between 0-10, 10 being the most destructive. This encourages consumers to buy friendlier products and spread awareness about the issue.
How we built it
We used a platform called thinkable which accelerates the app design process. We used the Optical Character Recognition API to convert the image into a text file. We researched chemicals' danger ratings online and compared them to our text file.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge for us was configuring the OCR API. It was very difficult to find a good API that was fit for our needs and the four of us spent hours solving this issue in many ways. In the end, we managed to find a working solution that was very good.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that our app is polished and working, and the fact that we could overcome our obstacles. We are also proud of the practicality of the project, as we see the possibility of it being realized into an actual product.
What we learned
We learned many things such as the OCR API, how APIs work and fit into programs, the app-making process, python code, Flask API, and how to write programs in the Thunkable platform.
What's next for PurePalette
Launching the app on platforms like the Apple Store, and partnering up with environmentally-friendly beauty/sanitation brands.
