Inspiration

The emotional and physical demands placed on healthcare workers are higher than ever, but support systems for monitoring their well-being are almost nonexistent. One tragic example is the case of RaDonda Vaught, a former Vanderbilt University Medical Center nurse who, in 2017, mistakenly administered the wrong medication, leading to a patient's death. Overworked and under-supported, she faced criminal charges and a conviction for criminally negligent homicide. Her story highlighted a terrifying reality: when burnout and exhaustion go unaddressed, the consequences can be devastating, not only for staff but for patients too. Nurses and Doctors rallied around her in support, knowing what its like to be tired in healthcare. PulseCheck was born from the urgent need to catch signs of stress, fatigue, and burnout early, before mistakes happen, before lives are lost, and before healthcare workers are pushed to the breaking point. Our goal is simple: to provide a fast, anonymous way for staff to check in on their wellness, and for leadership to respond before crisis strikes.

What it does

PulseCheck allows healthcare workers to complete a quick, anonymous check-in at the start of their shift, tracking mood, energy, stress, and sleep levels. Managers receive only aggregated, department-wide insights, helping them identify areas that may need extra support, all without exposing individual identities.

How we built it

We used React.js (with JSX styling) to create a fast, clean frontend experience. We used MongoDB for secure, scalable storage of wellness data. We integrated OpenAI to help generate weekly wellness summaries, offering leadership natural language updates on team health.

Challenges we ran into

My computer kept shutting down and it wiped all my code at one point. But we perservered! We also struggled with MongoDB there was a steep learning curve (Thank you Emily for the help!)\

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our visuals, our perseverance, and our idea!

What we learned

JavaScript How to integrate MongoDB. Patience at 4am. That I (Valentina ) need a new computer .

What's next for Pulsecheck

Expand MongoDB integration to track all user wellness variables consistently. Build a full Admin Dashboard showing KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) like department-wide stress or sleep trends. Improve OpenAI analysis to suggest team-level improvements (e.g., hydration breaks, mindfulness moments). Launch offline-first functionality, so check-ins work seamlessly without internet access.
