Inspiration
We wanted to create a product that would be easy to integrate into an everyday routine but still allow users to make a difference. We decided to make a browser extension for ease of use and installation as well as accessibility.
What it does
PSA monitors webpages as users shop for products. The extension reports a sustainability score for each brand as the user views different products, allowing users to see how their purchases end up affecting the rest of the world.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to develop a browser extension for Google Chrome.
Challenges we ran into
No one on our team had developed a browser extension before, so we had some difficulty getting started on the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud to say that we learned a new skill that we can leverage in the future to develop products to improve user experience and benefit the public.
What we learned
We learned how to develop web browser extensions that modify web page content.
What's next for PSA
In the future, we would love to improve PSA by suggesting alternatives when users are viewing a product with a low sustainability score. This would not only allow users to be aware of how their choices are affecting the world, but also encourage them to make purchases that support a better future.
