Inspiration
During our visit to Shirdi, we observed many people living in poverty and lacking access to education. Some children were begging on the streets instead of attending school. Curious, my friend asked one of them, “Why aren’t you studying?”
The child looked at us in silence, almost as if to ask, “Do we even have the chance to study?”
That moment had a big impact on us. We saw that poverty is not only about money, but also about missing opportunities. This led us to start Prospera, a platform that gives children like that a real chance to learn, grow, and build a better future.
What it does
Prospera is an AI-powered social and professional platform built for underprivileged communities. It acts like a LinkedIn for everyone, but with built-in guidance and recommendations to help users grow.
Key features:
- AI Recommendation Agent: Provides skill, job, and learning path recommendations personalised to users' profiles and interests.
- Opportunities Board: Offers access to job listings, internships, and volunteering opportunities.
- Community Connect: Fosters a supportive network for shared learning and growth.
How we built it
Prospera is an innovative platform designed to uplift underprivileged communities by providing them with the tools to learn, connect, and grow through technology and AI. We are a two-member beginner team who built Prospera with a focus on simplicity, functionality, and real-world impact. Our pilot program engaged over 150 users in the initial phase, with 85% reporting an improved ability to access learning resources and communicate effectively within their communities. One user from our pilot stated, 'Prospera has transformed the way we access information and connect, making a real difference in our daily lives.' These results underscore our commitment to creating tangible benefits for users.
- Frontend: Developed using React.js and Tailwind CSS to ensure a clean, responsive, and mobile-friendly interface.
- Backend: Powered by FastAPI and LangChain with google api and server-side logic efficiently.
- Database: Utilised SuperBase for secure and scalable management of user data and posts.
- AI Layer: Implemented a recommendation agent using Python (FastAPI) and machine learning models to deliver personalised guidance. We employed Genai langchain with the google api for our recommendations. For data sources, we utilised a custom dataset and mostly relied on webscraping and llm model, and integrated community-specific data collected from our pilot program to tailor the recommendations effectively to user needs.
- Hosting: Deployed via Vercel for the frontend and Render for the backend to maintain smooth and reliable performance.
Despite being a small team, we successfully created a working MVP that demonstrates how technology and AI can empower underprivileged communities to learn, connect, and grow.
Challenges we ran into
As a two-member beginner team, we faced several challenges while building Prospera:
- As novices in AI development, we undertook the simultaneous acquisition of Python for implementing natural language processing models and JavaScript for constructing the user-facing web interface. For example, we learned to employ the Python-based TensorFlow library to train and deploy machine learning models, while concurrently mastering JavaScript frameworks, such as React, to ensure seamless integration of the AI functionalities within the web platform.
- Coordinating frontend and backend deployment presented significant obstacles, particularly because our reliance on free hosting services imposed strict limitations on server capacity, memory allocation, and concurrent user support. For instance, we encountered frequent deployment errors due to imposed bandwidth caps and intermittent service interruptions, which necessitated continual adjustments to our system architecture to ensure platform stability within these constraints.
- With no dedicated community or mentorship support, we had to troubleshoot most problems independently through documentation and experimentation.
- We wanted Prospera to be completely free for users, which meant carefully designing the system to run efficiently without paid services or external funding.
Despite these challenges, we persevered and successfully built a functional AI-powered platform that reflects our mission — to empower people without making them pay for access to opportunity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a complete, production-ready prototype with just 2 members, leveraging Next.js, LangChain, and Supabase to deliver robust functionality from ideation to execution.
- Engineered and deployed an AI-powered recommendation system that provided real-time, personalised guidance to users, significantly enhancing the project’s impact and innovation.
- Designed an accessible, desktop-animated UI from scratch.
- Worked as a small team to create something meaningful that could create social impact.
What we learned
Building Prospera was a deeply educational and eye-opening experience for us. As two beginners, we learned far beyond just coding — we learned how to think, adapt, and build with purpose.
We explored how to integrate AI tools like LangChain into a functional, real-world web application, bridging the gap between backend logic and user experience.
We understood the core principles of Next.js and Supabase, gaining hands-on experience in full-stack development, authentication, and data management.
We learned how AI can be used responsibly — not just for automation or profit, but to create tools that can positively impact people’s lives.
We strengthened our skills in problem-solving and debugging, often spending hours researching solutions without direct community or mentor support.
We improved our collaboration and communication as a small team, learning how to divide tasks, manage time, and stay motivated under pressure.
We realised that real innovation doesn’t always require big budgets — just determination, curiosity, and a vision to help others.
Most importantly, we discovered that technology has the power to inspire hope, and even small ideas can plant the seed for meaningful change.
What's next for Prospera
Our journey with Prospera doesn’t end here — it’s just the beginning. We have a clear roadmap to make the platform more powerful, inclusive, and impactful:
Community Growth Page: We plan to build a dedicated page where organisations such as orphanages and NGOs can share updates about children’s growth and achievements, similar to an Instagram feed. This will help raise awareness and attract potential sponsors or donors.
Fundraising Integration: Enable secure fundraising features so verified organisations can receive support directly through the platform.
Mobile Version: Develop a mobile-friendly app to make Prospera accessible in rural and low-connectivity areas.
Custom Domain and SEO: Move Prospera to a dedicated domain with improved SEO optimisation to reach a wider audience.
Bug Fixes and Optimisation: Continuously improve performance, fix existing bugs, and refine the user experience based on feedback.
Advanced AI Integration: Integrate large language models (LLMs) to enhance recommendations, chat support, and personalised guidance.
Our long-term vision is to transform Prospera into a reliable digital ecosystem that empowers communities, connects organisations, and helps every individual move closer to opportunity and prosperity.
