PromptGreen
🌍 Prompt AI in a way that saves the environment!
Artificial intelligence and large-scale data processing rely on energy-intensive infrastructure that consumes enormous amounts of electricity. From training advanced models to processing everyday prompts and storing massive datasets, AI systems require powerful compute resources operating continuously in global data centers. Over the past few years, AI’s electricity usage has surged dramatically as large language models and AI-powered tools have become widely adopted.
Most users never see this hidden cost directly. However, every prompt sent to an AI system triggers computation that contributes to increased energy demand, higher carbon emissions, and growing pressure on global infrastructure. As AI adoption accelerates, its environmental footprint continues to expand quietly in the background, affecting the world in ways that are often overlooked.
🔢 What Are Tokens?
Large language models don’t read text the way humans do - they process input as tokens, which are small chunks of text (roughly 3–4 characters or parts of words). Every prompt you send is broken into tokens, and the number of tokens directly determines how much computation — and therefore energy - is required to process the request.
More tokens = more computation = more electricity usage.
Even small inefficiencies such as filler words, redundant phrasing, repeated instructions, or unnecessary verbosity increase token counts and amplify computational demand at scale. AI systems do not require conversational filler or politeness; they perform best when prompts are clear, concise, and information-dense.
⚡ Our Solution
This project reduces unnecessary AI computation by optimizing prompts before they reach the model. PromptGreen analyzes input text, removes redundant phrasing, compresses intent, and restructures language to use fewer tokens while preserving the original meaning.
Because token count directly determines the amount of computation an AI system performs, reducing tokens lowers processing demand and decreases energy usage per interaction. These efficiency improvements scale across thousands or millions of prompts, making AI usage more efficient and environmentally responsible without changing the user experience.
Every optimized prompt helps make AI a little greener.
🚀 How to Use
- Clone this repository onto your computer using
https://github.com/DPandaman/PromptGreen.git - Once the repository is downloaded locally, open Google Chrome and navigate to the extensions management page by typing
chrome://extensions/into your browser’s address bar. In the top-right corner of the page, enable Developer Mode, which allows Chrome to install extensions from local folders - Next, click the “Load unpacked” button and select the PromptGreen repository folder that you cloned to your machine. Chrome will then install the extension automatically, and voilà — your PromptGreen extension is ready to use
- Once installed, the extension will begin analyzing and optimizing prompts to reduce unnecessary tokens before they are processed by AI models, helping you create cleaner prompts while reducing unnecessary AI computation and energy usage.
