Inspiration

Healthcare costs are some of the largest and most unpredictable financial risks that people face. Many people struggle to anticipate the rising costs in medical expenses, while also missing opportunities to reduce costs.

At the same time, there are thousands of clinical trials that are actively recruiting participants. These trials often provide free treatment, care, and financial compensation. However, most people often miss out on the commissions on these trials due to being skeptical about the hidden costs of them. Our team built ForecastRX to bridge this gap.

Not only does this website predict healthcare costs with an ML model, but it also connects users to opportunities that can offset costs through clinical trial participation, all sources through clinicaltrials.gov

What It Does

ForecastRX combines financial forecasting, healthcare data, and discovery driven by AI to help users better understand and manage medical expenses.

ForecastRx analyzes healthcare spending patterns and predicts future costs. Users can visualize the following: Monthly healthcare spending, Commissions from trials, Predicting costs.

Using user profile data such as age, conditions, and locations, ForecastRX matches users to relevant clinical trials. Each result, retrieved from clinicaltrials.gov, includes the following: Match score, Eligibility breakdown, Trial compensation, Location and demographics, A description of the study.

Users can see how clinical trial participation can affect their finances. Example scenario:

Without trial: Annual healthcare cost is $10,380.

With trial: Your trial compensation is $1,200. Your adjusted cost is $9,180.

How do users use the actual website? Here’s how:

The user starts off creating an account by either signing in with google or by other email. Then, the user uploads their personal information, as well as their basic health profile, including conditions or diagnoses, medications & supplements, and emergency contact information. Additionally, the user inputs information about their insurance and finances, such as their insurance plan, monthly budget and the specifics of that budget (i.e. how much of it is allocated towards prescriptions, premiums, etc.)

The user can go to the forecast tab and can see valuable information such as monthly average, projected next month, RX estimate, insurance coverage, and more.

The user can go to trial search and search for trials using key words and by location. The user can pick and choose trials based on the profile relevance, eligibility estimate, and risk level. Each trial has information about them, such as location, date, genders, and more. There is also a link to the study on clinicaltrials.gov

If the user attends the trial, they can log it with the total compensation that they received. If the user keeps attending events, they can keep logging them and track how much total compensation they received.

Challenges We Ran Into

Clinical Trial Eligibility - Clinical trials often have strict and complicated eligibility requirements. Building a program that can estimate eligibility using limited user data was a huge challenge.

Combining Finance and Healthcare Data - Integrating financial data with health profile information required careful design to produce meaningful insights.

The system connects users to opportunities to reduce costs, which is what everyone wants, especially for those who may not be able to afford the rising costs in healthcare. Additionally, our program’s goal is to give people more detail about trials, and possibly make people less skeptical about them by providing them with more information. The combination of Finance, Healthcare, and AI creates a very powerful tool for improving access to care and reducing financial stress.
