Mars colonization has always captured humanity’s imagination — but what if the real problem wasn’t building the colony, but fighting off an unexpected alien invasion... in the laziest, coolest way possible? Project: Mars Mayhem is for you!

What it does

You defend the first Mars colony (established in 2100) from waves of alien drones. You don’t have to click buttons — just lift your hands slightly to fire bullets automatically. Protect your colony’s shield — it’s your only line of defense.

How we built it

Unity: Core game engine. XR Interaction Toolkit: For VR hand tracking and input handling. Custom Scripts: Automated bullet firing when hand elevation exceeds a threshold. Enemy AI that spawns, shoots, and attacks the shield. Immersive sound effects for shooting, impacts, and ambient Mars vibes.

Challenges we ran into

Triggerless Shooting Logic: Getting bullets to fire naturally based on hand elevation instead of traditional button presses was tricky to balance for comfort and responsiveness. Direction Control: Ensuring bullets accurately followed the hand’s forward direction without drift took fine-tuning transforms and rotations Gameplay Balance: Making the game challenging but not overwhelming without traditional weapon switching or cooldown buttons.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully hands-free VR shooter — no button mashing, just pure motion-based firing! Created a clean and expandable architecture: health systems, enemy waves, bullet logic — all easy to tweak and extend. Immersive VR experience combining movement, action, and ambient storytelling in a fun, non-serious way.

What we learned

Designing alternative VR input systems (without triggers) needs creative thinking and user testing. Bullet direction and movement must be handled carefully when working without rigidbodies for clean motion. Audio effects — even tiny ones — greatly boost immersion when used correctly.

Boss Battles: Giant alien commanders appearing after drone waves! Weapon Powerups: Unlock bigger, crazier guns based on streaks (still hands-free!). Multiplayer Mode: Team up with another Mask descendant across the colony! Advanced AI Enemies: Enemies that dodge, swarm, or explode on impact. Colonist Rescue Missions: Mini-missions to save stranded Martian settlers. Polished UI and VR Haptics: To feel bullet hits and shield damage more viscerally. Leaderboard System: Who can defend Mars the longest?
