Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the LiDAR on our iPhones/iPads which. Digital education is playing an increasingly prominent role in the post-pandemic era, our team wants to become a part of this exciting process. The problem which we have identified is the lack of functional AR presentation softwares on the App Store. We are deeply intrigued how such beautiful and precious instruments have made their way into our lives, and we also lament the public’s unawreness of the benefits LiDAR can bring into their lives such as AR measurement, AR education, AR presentation. Hence, ARC is born.
What it does
AR commenter, or ARC for short, is to provide an easily accessible platform for people to make side commentary and vivid presentations to better present their 3D model and share it with other people on mobile devices(mainly for iPad). This software enables users to add and edit directory side-note, presentation screens, and floating text boxes in the AR simulation with the 3D models that users want to present, and they can later download and share the commented model with other users with the app so they can also view it in AR.
How we built it
We built it using a combination of Xcode, blender, Swift as our main framework, along with our ipads, which have the LiDAR technology necessary to produce a working model
Challenges we ran into
We ran into problems during the importation of a model in which the the file format was not recognized, which we resolved by converting .blend to .obj. Model's raw code - rebuilt and debugged the model several times Object glitching and moving around - changing the pointer location
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is very very very proud of that fact that this thing runs is a miracle considering how many bugs we had at the beginning.
What we learned
Throughout this endeavour, we were awed by the unlimited potentials Augmented Reality can provide, such as the incorporation of sensory elements to provide an extremely realistic experience to the users experience and its ability to turn a boring concept on paper to a dynamic and vivid concept. We realized the lacked of available tools and framework on the market, and often had to build tools ourselves because there are no other available alternatives on the internet. Thus, we think AR still has a a lot of potentials in terms of building new projects and will be looking for ways to exploit that in the future.
What's next for Project AR Commenter (ARC)
For the next part of our Project, we plan to turn the demo we currently have into an app onto the App Store that will allow IOS users to import their 3D model files directly as well as sharing it with ours for the purpose of education or business presentation etc...
